That’s right, Andrew: The decline of religious faith in the time period of that Pew study, concentrated as it is among youngsters, can’t explain the distressing statistics bearing on the happiness of the middle-aged in the other study. Stepping back to the broader phenomena of both of them, though, I think the question is still open. The decline of organized religion among moderately educated whites, as shown here, goes back further than the Pew study does. As does the decline of marriage with which these trends are almost certainly intertwined.
