Well said, Derb.  I’m not arguing with you.  My intention really was to concede that, when I used the phrase in trying to explain national self-image, I may well have been bringing too much of my own baggage to the analysis.  I hope there still is a national self-image, but I may well be overrating the immigration-friendly component of it.
