Jonah, I obviously wasn’t holding Trump up as a policy paragon. It’s just that he’ll say anything, and won’t go there on Medicare. My ideal counter-factual for House Republicans would have been a rigorous ten-year budget that’s a good, clean contrast with Obama, which is what Republicans have before you even start talking Medicare. Then, Paul Ryan running for president to give his longer-range policy ideas a high-profile platform without all House Republicans — many of whom were running against Medicare cuts 6 months ago — necessarily endorsing them. But it is what it is, and there’s no choice now but to fight. I agree with Stanley that IPAB and Obama’s Medicare cuts are the places to look for good solid footholds in this debate.
