Kathryn, I’ll miss The New York Sun, and not just because Seth Lipsky was kind enough to publish my column every week. The Sun had terrific reporting on critical issues from the likes of Eli Lake, and also great music coverage from one Jay Nordlinger (the highbrow end) and Will Friedwald (jazz). I always thought The New York Times could use a rival not just on grounds of political disposition but on the fact that its arts and sports pages are one almighty snoozeroo these days.
These are tough times for newspapers. I was in a coffee place in London I used to swing by a lot in the mid-Nineties. Back then, come 4pm or so, a good 40 per cent of the patrons would be reading the Evening Standard. The other day, nobody was. Plenty of reading going on – off blackberries, cells, laptops. But no papers.
