Great stuff. I’d like to add that illegitimacy figures vary dramatically by race and ethnicity, and there is an obvious pattern, which bears out Robert’s thesis: The groups that have higher illegitimacy rates are struggling more socioeconomically. For non-Hispanic whites, the percentage of births to unmarried women is 28.6 percent; for non-Hispanic blacks, 72.3 percent; for Native Americans, 65.8 percent; for Hispanics, 52.5 percent; and for Asians/Pacific Islanders, 16.9 percent. Not only do they have the lowest percentage of out-of-wedlock births, but they are the only group whose percentage did not increase from 2007.
