Mark L.: The endorsements by Muslim groups of Ron Paul in this week’s Michigan primary and of Bush in the 2000 general election were driven by the same considerations — which candidate at the time in question was seen as the weakest (weaker) in opposing militant Islam. In 2000, Bush not only opposed the use of secret evidence against terrorists, he also bemoaned airport profiling of Arabs (see, for instance, this UPI story from October of that year) — and since that was before 9/11, those were the only security measures available for Muslim groups to fight against. There are plenty of reasons not to vote for Paul, but basing it on the fact that a Muslim paper endorsed him for what you and I would agree are problematic reasons would suggest that we should have voted for Gore-Lieberman in 2000.
