Kathryn, I don’t think Rumsfeld was the “talking point” that gave the Dems the advantage on Iraq. The war itself was. Had Bush fired Rummy in September, say, nothing would have changed in the Democratic attack. In fact, it would have been enhanced by that firing. The new defense secretary would not have been confirmed by the time of the election, and his views on how to conduct the war would have become part of the campaign — you know, “Why won’t Bob Gates tell us what he’s planning to do?” There’s no escape from this one. The problem for Republicans is that America isn’t winning the war, not that Rummy isn’t winning the war.
