re: Senator Wallop

Most folks who come to Washington to serve in Congress do so with little distinction or make little mark along the way. They are the flotsam and jetsam of politics. Others disgrace themselves and bring scandal and dishonor to the institution. A tiny few, however, stand out for their courage, their principle, and their leadership. Malcolm Wallop, who passed away yesterday, was such a figure, one of the rare great men in political life. He loved liberty and he loved his country. His 18 years in the U.S. Senate were of great consequence for the nation, which is safer and more prosperous today for his efforts. He was a true gentleman, a wonderful friend to those lucky enough to know him, and a hero to countless others. Don’t miss George Landrieth’s wonderful tribute to Senator Wallop at the website of Frontiers of Freedom, the organization Wallop founded after leaving the Senate.

— Max Schulz worked with Mr. Wallop on the 1996 Steve Forbes presidential campaign.
