I’m not as committed a hater of soccer as I used to be — I don’t get it, but there’s no accounting for taste, and I myself am a fan of a game that most people consider incredibly boring, so who’s to judge?
Yet there was something almost comical in the U.S.A.–England outcome. You can imagine the conversation:
Soccer fan: “There was an amazing upset in the tournament today!”
Non-soccer fan: “Oh, really? Who won?!?”
Soccer fan: “No one! That’s what’s so amazing!”
Non-soccer fan: “Uh, OK. What was the score?”
Soccer fan: “There was no score. That’s what’s so amazing!!”
