Ramesh, you make a good point while I was being extremely sloppy making one. Of course voters should choose politicians they agree with, and if a Democrat will hold the Connecticut seat no matter what, then a vote for Lamont is probably a gimme for a liberal. Still, the suicidal nature of ideological cleansing, which is what I was referring to and which is what will cost Joe Lieberman his party’s nomination if he loses tomorrow, is that it is never-ending. The emboldened Kos Kids and others will succeed in convincing conventional-wisdom Democrats that the party must shift decisively to the Left, and the purifying will be the story of the next couple of years. We’re still fighting the War on Terror, and if one of the parties unilaterally declares a ceasefire, which is what I believe the message of a Lieberman defeat will ultimately be, that will not only be dangerous to its prospects in the medium term but to all of us in the longer term.
