That — what the campaign pointed to and Pawlenty’s recent marriage-pledge past — is exactly why not signing this one is so strange. We know where you stand, dude, you might as well sign it! 

Unless you’re telling us you’re having second thoughts? Which I doubt, but it is a question people (i.e. other campaigns) can legitimately ask, without further explanation.

Romney didn’t sign the Susan B. Anthony List pledge, but then crafted his own one, so we know where he stands. If I were a Pawlenty adviser, perhaps I’d suggest something similar for Pawlenty on marriage — if it didn’t make more sense for him to just sign the NOM one.
