O.K., Andrew, fair enough, but don’t stop there. Tell us more. What is your “or else” going to be with Assad? Or do you have none because you are just talking with him for the sake of talking, on the theory he will be so grateful for the conversation that he will change his strategic posture on that basis alone? And are you going to follow through with that “or else” when push comes to shove? Even when it supposedly does more to inflame the Arab street? Even when it undoes all the propaganda value of that meaningless international conference? Even when all the op-ed writers call for more and more talk? Or are you going to make impotent threats that undermine your credibility further?
