Bob – Color me skeptical. There’s a lot of talk about how debates matter this time around, and that’s true. Debates destroyed Perry and saved Gingrich (as I’ve discussed for a while). But has Romney ever improved his standing in a debate? It seems to me you could argue he’s held his own in debates as others have prospered or imploded, but he’s never really gotten a big boost from them. The only way I can see Romney doing real damage against Gingrich is by revealing new information. He’s simply not good enough to repackage old attacks in newly damaging ways. Maybe I’m wrong, but I suspect tonight’s debate will be great fun, but it won’t stop the Gingrich surge.
