Sounds about right, from a reader:
Jonah –
In Joe Wilson’s letter to the Senate Committee (as
opposed to the letter to the Post, which is much less
detailed), he insists that what looked like his wife’s
promotion of his candidacy was actually her
concurrence to someone else’s suggestion. That may
actually be technically true, but it doesn’t matter.
The issue was: why did Novak’s sources out Plame? The
most plausible reason was to explain how Wilson got
the job, which is relatively innocent. Wilson
insisted that couldn’t be right because his wife
wasn’t involved — it had to be something more
sinister, like revenge. But whether or not Plame
actually mentioned Wilson’s name first, it sure must
have looked like she was involved to Novak’s sources.
So the relatively innocent reason for outing is still
the most plausible, and Wilson’s insistence that she
was not the prime mover is irrelevant if not
disingenuous.
