Mark, I’m not so sure.  One of my terrorist defendants was from Sudan (back then, I think we still called it THE Sudan).  His lawyer later told me about trying to prepare him to testify in his own defense at trial, explaining to him that people on tape talking about killing tens of thousands of infidels really needed “to humanize themselves” for the jury.  The lawyer suggested that he tell the jurors some interesting things about growing up in Sudan, whereupon they had this exchange:

Jihadi:  Have you ever been to Khartoum?

Lawyer:  No.

Jihadi:  I’ll tell you this:  It’s no Nairobi!
