You’re not alone, Derb. A few years ago Matt Crawford wrote an essay in The New Atlantis (entitled “Shop Class as Soulcraft”) on this question of our failure to interest the next generation in tinkering and building. It has been one of the most popular essays the magazine has published, and I gather Crawford is also working on a book on the subject.

Yuval Levin is the director of social, cultural, and constitutional studies at the American Enterprise Institute and the editor of National Affairs.
