Re: Vanity Fair

Believe it or not, Saks’ Snowpeople book and corresponding window display is not the strangest department store statement being made this holiday season. Barney’s New York decorated its windows in celebration of the plight of Rudolph the Recycling Reindeer who saves Christmas — and the world — with environmentalism.

Pulsing green lights feature in all of the windows, which comprise countless recyclable objects such as bottles, cans, bottle caps and, in one window, a huge number of MetroCards. The windows bear titles like “12 Green Days of Christmas,” “Green Is the New Black,” and “Heroes of Green,” the last a tribute to crusading environmentalists like Daryl Hannah and Thomas L. Friedman.

The “12 Green Days of Christmas” include twelve pounds of tofu, nine New Age gurus, six compost toilets, two vegan chefs and a Prius in a pear tree — an organically grown pear tree, I suspect.
