Kathryn: I think you’re right that part of the Democrats’ motivation in talking up an amnesty bill is to sow infighting on the Right between pro- and anti-amnesty sides. The problem: That could only work if there were an immigration proposal that some on the Right favored while others opposed, like the 2007 bill.

But there’s no such thing this time — they’ve ticked off their GOP waterboy in the Senate, Lindsey Graham, and wider Republican support would require buy-in by business, which is not interested in any bill that doesn’t contain a large indentured-labor program, which labor is dead-set against. So without the Chamber of Commerce backing a bill, and without a Republican co-author selling a bill, where’s the infighting supposed to come from?
