Jonathan, I don’t know where the rumor about your guy quitting came from, but it’s stuck (heard it on local TV today, chatters and readers keep asking me: “Do you think it’s true?” And I think it has stuck in part because it’s what people were thinking. “If Fred doesn’t show a surge soon, he’ll probably bail.” I think it stuck because it rang true.
That said, I may be hoping against McCain here — but I don’t think I am. First off, if Romney does well at the debates tonight and tomorrow, he may give McCain a run for his little money Tuesday. And if he doesn’t, there may be an opportunity for Thompson. There certainly are people who want Romney or Thompson to earn the chance to be their Right candidate.
