Jonah, good points. Another thing that’s noteworthy about this is that for years the editorial pages of the “respectable” newspapers have inveighed against the deficit and the debt. It used to be said of measures to cut the deficit or scale back entitlements, “It might please the editorial page of the Washington Post, but will anyone else support it?” Now, you have people in the streets protesting against, among other things, the deficit and the debt, and they are treated as threats to the republic.
