Reactionary Urbanites

I was just listening — in my automobile — to an interview with a Pakistani academic. Nothing earthshakingly interesting to it. Except that the guy said that in Pakistan the military is recruiting from the cities more, and that’s making the military much more conservative because inner cities in Pakistan are religiously very conservative. I thought that was fairly interesting, in that seems counter to the trend in America and Europe where cities have historically been corrosive to that sort of thing. I was trying to think of an American or European city that famously fostered anti-cosmopolitanism. I’m sure there must be examples, but I couldn’t think of one.
