I wish I could claim credit for that line, but Mickey Kaus got there first. He links to the president’s speech almost exactly a year ago saying that illegal aliens should be required to pay back taxes (although even in last year’s Senate amnesty bill, which the president endorsed, illegals only needed to pay three of the previous five years’ worth of back taxes). This gives a whole new meaning to those TV ads saying “the IRS is giving you a one-time opportunity to settle your tax obligations.” Why not give everybody a tax amnesty — er, I mean a “comprehensive tax reform”?
