The Corner

This Reader Is Right

Hi, Kathryn. I didn’t see that as a low blow at Quayle and I doubt that’s how it was meant. But from an electoral POV, Quayle was an unforced error. The chickenhawk draft deferral criticism he drew was unfair, but unfair doesn’t mean ineffective. It should have been anticipated and avoided (speaking strictly from the utilitarian electability sense). And although he was experienced, especially compared to today’s Obama, he did seem almost boyish next to Bentsen and Bush himself.

Me: And a boy [Kaine] standing next to a teen [Obama] isn’t an inspiring ticket to adults.
