Rick: The most important fact here is the practically nobody, in any country, knows diddly about that country’s immigration policies, because they don’t need to. If you know nothing, I daresay our President’s Monday night speech sounded lovely. Once you start to crunch the numbers & explode the myths, it falls apart. The great enemy of the President here, and of the rest of the amnesty-plus-open-borders lobby, is widespread public understanding of the immigration system, and of what can reasonably be projected from current policies for America’s future.
The great taboo on discussing immigration that held up through the 1980s and 1990s — the widely-propagated understanding that it was “nativist” or “racist” to say anything negative whatsoever about the immigration system, or about immigrants, legal or otherwise — got us where we are now. The dogged, valiant work of people like Michelle Malkin, George Borjas, Mark Krikorian, Lou Dobbs, and Peter Brimelow at bringing the facts forward, in the teeth of all the massed armies of Political Correctness, will eventually pay off. There are already signs it is doing so. Then the kind of vapid sleight of hand we saw in the President’s Monday speech will be clearly seen for what it is, by enough people to make a difference.
