The Corner

For The Record

No license allowed in these parts. Good thing too, accuracy is better. A reader notes:

on NRO you mention the redirection of jacques chirac’s campaign website

to the USO site, calling it a “hack”. a hack is an act which

requires a substantial amount of technical skill, cleverness, or both.

the term for the action detailed at

http://www.nationalreview.com/thecorner/03_04_20_corner-archive.asp#007760

is “domain hijacking.” to accomplish it, you only need to look up when

the domain name is scheduled to expire, then try to register it as soon

as it does so.

usually this results from inattentive system administrators forgetting

which domains they need to worry about.

but to re-iterate: there is no technical skill required to accomplish

this, so it is not a “hack”.
