A Recording of U.S. Catholic Protests Against Hitler in November 1938 Turns Up in Catholic University Archives

A major archival discovery is a 1938 recording of a national Catholic broadcast against Hitler’s treatment of the Jews six days after Kristallnacht ended.  This radio program was carried live on both NBC and CBS radio on November 16, 1938.  Participants in the program were Al Smith (former presidential candidate and governor of New York), and three Catholic bishops from around the nation.  Catholic University of America archivists discovered the audio recording of this broadcast in an old box.  One speaker in the broadcast said “in the face of such injustice toward the Jews of Germany, I express my revulsion, disgust and grief.”  The others added similar condemnations.  The CUA Magazine carried this story in its November 2007 edition.  The article and the recording can be found here.
