The Refusal to See Evil

There are many reasons why modern leaders and intellectuals have systematically refused to recognize evil, even when it is right in front of their noses. Bruce Bawer has a marvelous discussion of the consistent, indeed compulsive and pathological refusal of star reporters and feckless owners and editors, of the New York Times from Stalin and Hitler to Castro and the Cambodian genocidists. I cannot think of a more important issue. Indeed, I think I’ll write a book about it.
