As if there was a need for more examples for today’s newsletter about the “Most Erratic President in the World,” in the span of about 24 hours, the Trump administration’s talks with Iran have been scheduled to occur Friday in Istanbul, moved to Oman, canceled entirely because of the Iranians backtracking, and, as of this writing, are back on the schedule. Perhaps by the time you read this, the circumstances will have changed yet again. The status of the talks is changing only slightly slower than I can type.
None of this clarifies A) what kind of deal about the future of the Iranian nuclear program would be acceptable to both the Iranian mullahs and U.S. national security interests B) what, if anything, the president is willing to do after pledging to the Iranian protesters “HELP IS ON ITS WAY” and C) why anyone would trust an Iranian regime that has broken almost every treaty it has ever signed.
