In a tense exchange on the Senate floor yesterday, Harry Reid attacked freshman Republican senator Ted Cruz. The majority leader called Cruz “a schoolyard bully” for not letting Democrats go to conference over budget resolutions. Cruz was specifically opposing Reid’s motion to appoint senators to the joint House-Senate budget committee because he was concerned that they could raise the debt ceiling or increase taxes.

“My friend from Texas, like the schoolyard bully, he pushes everybody around and is losing,” Reid said. “Instead of playing the game according to the rules, he not only takes the ball home with him, but changes the rules; that way no one wins except the bully who tries to indicate to people he has won.”

“I wasn’t aware we are in the schoolyard,” Cruz responded after Reid finished, before the majority leader barked that Cruz must either object or not according to procedural rules, and couldn’t “reserve the right to object” — Cruz eventually objected.
