Yesterday was Europe Day! To mark this important, joyous and (this year) ironically timed occasion, here’s the statement by the EU’s “High Representative” (supposedly a sort of foreign minister), the amusingly underwhelming Catherine Ashton. Some choice extracts:
Europe Day has become the symbol of a new beginning. . . . Europeans are united in the way they perceive foreign policy and the external action. There is consensus for more cooperation, coherence, visibility and joint action. The European Union is reshaping its capacity to respond adequately to the new challenges.
If these people actually believe a word that they say, then the EU is in even more trouble than I thought.
