For a moment, on learning that former New Jersey governor Jim McGreevey had been turned down for the Episcopal priesthood, I thought my erstwhile ecclesial body was returning to its former high standards. What had gone wrong? No, it wasn’t McGreevey’s polyester blazer.
Nor was it having come out of the closet as a “gay American.” It wasn’t exactly his divorce either. “It was not being gay but for being a jackass — [McGreevey] didn’t come out of the whole divorce looking good,” a source with the Episcopal Diocese of Newark told the New York Post.
