Reynolds Responds

Instapundit responds to my column here. I think it’s perfectly sensible given our disagreements. Indeed, he offers a grand bargain where I join him in opposing official immunity for cops and the like. I’ll ponder that a bit more, but I am intrigued.

I will say one last thing, since I am really, really, exhausted with all the email on this. I’ve been surprised at how emotionally charged the subject is with many readers, on both sides of the question. But my biggest surprise is how many people  — not all, not even a majority, but quite a large minority — seem to think that the exclusionary rule is what requires police to have warrants or is little more than an interchangeable term for the  4th amendment. Something like 20 people emailed me to scream bloody murder about the “fact” that I don’t think police should need a warrant to bust into someone’s house. I never said anything such thing. But it seems meaningful distinctions sometimes get lost in the rush to attack favorite strawmen.
