His sprawling book What It Takes is widely regarded as one of the best books ever written on modern American politics. It covers the 1988 election — not exactly an epic moment in U.S. history, but a surprisingly wonderful subject. Dead at 62.

John J. Miller, the national correspondent for National Review and host of its Great Books podcast, is the director of the Dow Journalism Program at Hillsdale College. He is the author of A Gift of Freedom: How the John M. Olin Foundation Changed America.
