Former Texas governor Rick Perry is set to announce that Margaret Lauderback will serve as his national finance director and that Don McGahn will serve as his campaign counsel.
Lauderback served as the finance director for Perry’s ill-fated 2012 campaign. There, she raised a whopping $20 million in the closing months of 2011 alone. She went on to serve as the finance director of Greg Abbott’s 2014 gubernatorial campaign.
McGahn, a partner at the Washington, D.C., law firm Jones Day, is the controversial former chairman of the Federal Election Commission and former counsel to the National Republican Congressional Committee. He’s currently representing embattled Illinois congressman Aaron Schock, who announced his resignation on Tuesday in the wake of critical reports about his use of taxpayer money to fund his jet-setting lifestyle.
During his time at the FEC, McGahn was an outspoken foe of campaign-finance reform and worked to block dozens of rules that would have curtailed the influence of money in politics. He also made headlines for his stint as a guitarist in the rock band Scott’s New Band.
The announcement comes on the heels of additional hires on the Perry team, including lobbyist Austin Barbour, who will run his super PAC.
