Roger Stone Got Busted for Being Roger Stone

The Stone indictment reads about how you’d expect given how Roger Stone has always operated. There’s the nose for political dirt — of course he was drawn to WikiLeaks. There’s the over-inflation of his own role — his connection to WikiLeaks was attenuated and reliant on other marginal players, while he complained of not being able to get Steve Bannon to return his calls. There’s the acting out of a Nixon fantasy — unlike many in our politics and media, he doesn’t imagine himself as on the side that unraveled Watergate, but on the side that carried it out and covered it up. His indictment is the latest comeuppance of someone whose sleazy MO couldn’t withstand the unaccustomed rigors of a federal criminal probe.
