Representative Mike Rogers, a Republican who favors more support for the Syrian rebels and a greater U.S. role in Syria, said the White House has “candidly, done an awful job explaining to the American people . . . what is the national interest in any level of engagement in a place like Syria,” later calling their political strategy “a confusing mess.”

“They really needed to start two years ago” on convincing Americans that the U.S. should be involved in Syria, Rogers said, noting ”they don’t have strong relationships in Congress.”

“This cannot be about Barack Obama,” Rogers said. “It has to be about what is in the best interests of the United States of America.”
