Romney & Polygamy

Jiminy Jillikers, a lot of readers are taking Romney’s polygamy comment very seriously. Something I was clearly not doing in my post last night. Anyway, I thought this was an interesting reaction:

I think people have badly misinterpreted Romney’s comment that he can’t think of anything more horrible than polygamy.  I realize you were pointing out the hyperbolic nature of the statement, but it has been widely interpreted that he hates or deplores polygamy.  But I don’t think that’s what he meant to express.  Imagine, if you will, that a man you considered a true prophet of God informed you and your wife that you should take a second wife.  That’s would be a really tough pill to swallow.  This was Brigham Young’s reaction upon learning about polygamy.

“I will accept this principle. And it’s the first time in my life that I desire the grave. I wish I were dead rather than have to do this.”

That was what Romney was trying to express and the reaction that most happily married men would have.
