Mitt Romney is no birther.
“I think the citizenship test has been passed. I believe the president was born in the United States,” Romney told Larry Kudlow in an interview last night.
“The man needs to be taken out of office, but his citizenship isn’t the reason why,” Romney added.
But on health-care, Romney didn’t take such a definitive tone. Asked by Kudlow if the individual mandate portion of Romneycare was a mistake, he hedged.
“One thing I learned is this, which is that you don’t take ideas from a state and try and impose them on the whole nation,” Romney responded. “Our nation is too different, too diverse to say that what works in Massachusetts is somehow going to be grabbed by the federal government, usurping the power of states and imposing a one-size-fits-all plan on the nation.”
He also wants to know why, if Democrats think Romneycare is so terrific, none of them ever asked him for advice during the deliberation over Obamacare.
“Not one Democrat called me and said, OK, ‘Of what you did in Massachusetts, what would you do again? What would you differently? What things worked? What things didn’t work?’” Romney said.
He also said what his response would have been if any Democrats had called: “I would have told them this, I’d have said, ‘What you’re putting in place at the nation is not only unconstitutional, it’s bad law, it will not work. And even if it were perfect, which it’s not, it’s expensive.”
