I agree with Mickey Kaus that the media fact-checkers in this debate are distorting it more than the actual participants. (Not for the first time.) Romney’s accusation against McCain is that he wanted to let illegal immigrants collect Social Security benefits. McCain’s defense is basically that he would only have let them get those benefits after he had given them citizenship first. (I’m not sure that’s really much of a defense with the target audience.) Neither side is speaking with precise accuracy, but Romney is essentially right.
