Roy Moore’s Big Week

Last week was a very good week for Roy Moore. He got a quasi-endorsement from Donald Trump that will become less quasi- over time. And accusations against Al Franken and John Conyers create a very useful sense that “everyone does it” (if not what Moore is guilty of) and a smoke screen of Democratic hypocrisy. His chances of getting elected have increased by some discernible amount. On top of this, if he makes it to Washington, it is less likely he will get expelled now that he has Trump’s support. I have been doubtful that Republicans would expel Moore regardless, given the time and drama it would entail and the fact that an immediate expulsion might be indistinguishable from an impermissible refusal to seat him.
