For those who have asked: the song was that fine old standard “Without the

Communist Party There Would Be No New China.” I am sorry to say I couldn’t

get anyone to join in the chorus. My audience, in fact, had that stunned,

speechless look the company has in the Act One finale of the Barber of

Seville — “Freddo ed immobile / come una statua” etc. etc.
