Saudi Arabia Considers Axing Public Beheadings

A joint commission from Saudi Arabia’s justice, health, and interior ministries is considering replacing the kingdom’s public beheadings with death by firing squad. The reason? A lack of reliable executioners. In a statement from the committee, the assembled experts explained, “This solution seems practical, especially in light of shortages in official swordsmen or their belated arrival to execution yards in some incidents; the aim is to avoid interruption of the regularly-taken security arrangements.” Last year, Saudi Arabia beheaded 76 people, according to AFP.
