Saving the News

Must newspapers die before people start to miss them? Can they change enough that people will want to buy them again? Can the news be saved, or is profitability unattainable in the Internet era?

Sen. John Kerry (D, Mass.) chaired a hearing this week examining one “sort-of-bailout” solution currently before Congress, which would allow for newspapers to claim 501(c)3 non-profit status, as though they were churches. This model has its own difficulties, as I write today.
