Schumer: ‘We Democrats Didn’t’ Engage in Obstructionism over SCOTUS Picks

Sen. Chuck Schumer said Republicans should follow the example Democrats set with Anthony Kennedy and help President Obama fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court.

Appearing today on This Week, Schumer warned Republicans not to follow Senate Majority Leader “over the cliff” and refuse votes on any Obama nominee.

Sen. McConnell, Schumer said, “doesn’t even know who the president’s going to propose and he said, ‘no, we’re not having hearings; we’re not going to go forward to lead the Supreme Court vacant at 300 days in a divided time.’” This kind of obstructionism isn’t going to last.”

“We Democrats didn’t do this,” Schumer said. “We voted 97-0 for Justice Kennedy in the last year of Reagan’s term.”

“A lot of the mainstream Republicans are going to say I may not follow” McConnell, Schumer said. “I think the president, past is prologue, will nominate someone who is mainstream.”
