Scott Walker Pushes Food Stamp Reforms In Iowa

Governor Scott Walker (R., Wis.) received some of the loudest applause of the day while discussing the drug testing and job training requirements for food stamp recipients that he has supported in his state.

“For adults without children, who are able to work, I don’t allow them to get assistance unless they’re signed up for employability training programs because I just believe firmly that there are jobs to be had across our state as there are across America and I want to make sure they have the skills to get those jobs,” Walker said at the Iowa Agriculture Summit when asked about the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s food stamp budget.

Walker noted that there are 70,000 to 80,000 job openings advertised on Wisconsin government  websites.

“[W]hen I propose things like work requirements or employability training for food stamps [liberals say] that we’re somehow making it harder to get government assistance. I’ve got to tell you, we’re not, we’re making it easier to get a job,” Walker said, to applause.

“We’re willing to help you out, we are good and decent people, we’ll hep our neighbor when they’re down and out, but if you’re able and there’s jobs out there, we’re going to help you get back on your feet again because we expect that out of each and every one of our fellow citizens,” he concluded.
