A Self-Dealing and Ineffectual Congress

Shouldn’t John McCain be hitting Congress harder, the least popular institution in the land? This stuff would seem to be right up his alley–the Chris Dodd and Kent Conrad cut-rate mortgages, the Charlie Rangel apartment deal, the lobbying powerhouse that is Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. It would all seem perfectly lined-up for McCain to argue that Congress is fat, happy, and corrupt, and disconnected from the problems facing the American public. Come on, John, get a little riled up! And do it over something other than just earmarks. How weird is it that the financial system seems at times to be teetering on the edge of collapse, and neither presidential candidate seems particularly engaged on the issue? People are scared, and bitter and frustrated about Washington. John McCain has in the past been a powerful spokesman for those kinds of sentiments. Why not now when it could give his presidential campaign a powerful kick?
