I haven’t seen any outrage even at the paleo sites on this report from over the weekend: “Darfur Killings Soften Bush’s Opposition to International Court“. One of the few good things about this White House has been its “long-held and fierce opposition to the International Criminal Court,” and even that they’re now tempted to abandon. Perhaps this is because Bush’s earlier opposition to it was too narrow and not based solidly enough on principle. The problem is not just that the ICC would be “a possible forum for frivolous cases against U.S. military and civilian officials,” as of course it would be, but that it would undermine national sovereignty overall. The case we need to make (and will need to make next year when Obama moves to sign us up) is that India’s soldiers will also be subject to this kangaroo court, and Israeli bureaucrats, and Colombian cabinet members, and, yes, even those in Sudan and Zimbabwe. Because if we cut down the trees of sovereignty in pursuit of the devil, where will we hide when the devil turns round on us?
