Senate Kills Debo Adegbile Nomination

The Senate has rejected the nomination of Debo Adegbile, President Obama’s choice to head up the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. Eight Democrats (including a procedural vote from Harry Reid) voted against cloture, yielding a final tally of 47–52. They were: Bob Casey (Pennsylvania), Chris Coons (Delaware), Joe Donnelly (Indiana), Heidi Heitkamp (North Dakota), Joe Manchin (West Virginia), Mark Pryor (Arkansas), John Walsh (Montana).

Adegbile had been widely criticized for advocating for a member of the Black Panter Parthy, Mumia Abu Jamal, who was convicted of killing a Philadelphia cop in 1981.
