The Senator, The Cardinal & Cannon 915

From a reader, canon 915 of the Code of Canon Law:

“Those…who obstinately persist in manifest grave sin, are not to be admitted to holy communion.”

In any diocese, the decision about whether to enforce this canon rests with the bishop. Yet even where bishops choose to ignore it, canon 915 should enable the laity to ask a few very awkward questions. Consider, for example, several queries for the cardinal archbishop of Washington, Theodore McCarrick:

*Throughout his public career, Your Eminence, Senator John Kerry has supported abortion on demand, advocating federal funds for abortions in a variety of circumstances, and the very day you met him earlier this month Senator Kerry began airing pro-choice campaign commercials on television. In advocating abortion on demand, is Senator Kerry guilty of “manifest grave sin?”

*If not, Your Eminence, why not?

*If so, Your Eminence, why have you failed to ban Senator Kerry from receiving communion in your archdiocese? And why has Archbishop Sean O’Malley failed to ban the Senator from receving communion in Boston?
