“Serious Times”

Larry Craig’s resignation speech, during which he pointed out with a passion that we live in serious times of war — no time for distractions — was classy and responsible. A sad day — but in resigning and apologizing “for what I have caused” he was a model of taking responsibility for what one owes his constituents. He took his job seriously today. He didn’t have to get into details and didn’t. He’s moving on and will deal with his problems as a private citizen.

The disgraceful moment of the speech came when people cheered — so far as I could tell, watching on TV — as he announced he is stepping down. Applaud his service and let him be.
